​What are Scientific Methods?

​Scientific methods are the ways that scientists find answers to questions or to solve problems.

When they are looking for an answer to a question or problem, they use six different steps.

These 6 steps are part of the scientific methods.

Identify a problem or a question that you want to investigate.

Step 1:
Ask a Question

Gather information (data) and resources related to your question or problem to understand what is already known.

Step 2:
Make an observation

statement that guides research or experiments and provides a proposed explanation for an observation.

If {this happens} then {this will happen}.

Step 3:
Form a hypothesis

come up with experiments and test it to test the hypothesis. It involves collecting data through observations and measurements.​

Step 4:
Test the hypothesis

Examine the data collected to determine whether it supports or Reject your hypothesis.

Step 5:
Analyze data and draw conclusions

Share your findings with others through reports, presentations, or publications.

Step 6:
Communicate Results

These steps may not be used in order from 1-6, some scientists start with an answer and look for the question or problem for the answer.

Some steps can also be repeated or reviewed as the experiment continues, as needed. BUT steps are never skipped.

Being flexible in the scientific processes is important and helps it be effective for solving scientific problems or questions.
