Elements are made up of just one type of atom. However, the atoms can be arranged in different ways:

• Single atoms

• In clusters of atoms called molecules

• In large grid-like structures called lattices

Fun Fact

There are 92 elements that exist NATURALLY. Only SIX of them are monatomic. This means, that they exist as single atoms, not multiple atoms joined to form a molecule.

In molecular elements, all the molecules are identical with the same shape, size, number and type of atom. They don't always have just two atoms - look at the buckyball!

Each type of molecule has its own formula. The little number tells us how many there are.

Lattices of Elements

Metallic Elements: Strong and solid at room temperature. The layers can slide over each other which means they can be bent. Nearly all metal elements form lattices.

Non-Metallic Elements: Can vary in shape (some form layers while others form complex networks. This means they have different properties. Only a few exist as lattices.

Carbon is a non-metal that forms a lattice shape. It exists in a number of different forms though. Look at the difference between diamond and graphite which are both made of only carbon atoms.
