Superlative phrases ALWAYS have an adjective and that adjective ALMOST ALWAYS ends in -est.

Example: this is the cleanest sweater.

As I have explained before ALMOST ALWAYS the adjectives in superlative phrases end in -est, but if the adjective is very long like beautiful, the -est would not be added and only the word most would be put in front of it.

There are some SUPERLATIVE adjectives that are IRREGULAR, that is, their ending is NOT -est, it is a word that can end in any ending.
