PAN (Personal Area Network)
Types of Computer Networks
It refers to a computer network used for data transmission among devices
such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and personal digital assistants
(PDAs) within the immediate vicinity of an individual.
PANs are designed for personal
use and typically cover a very
small area, usually within a
range of a few meters.
5
LAN (Local Area Network)
Types of Computer Networks
A LAN is a small wired or wireless network. Usually, when people use a
LAN network all of the devices are connected to each other in the same
building. Sometimes the devices may be connected on a single floor in a
large building.
If there are many computers
connected to a LAN, this can
slow the network down, which
can lead to delays in sending
and receiving information.
6
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
Types of Computer Networks
A MAN is a network that is bigger than a LAN but too small to be called a
WAN. A MAN is big enough to connect devices within a city.
As MAN networks are smaller, they
are usually more efficient than a
WAN network as the data being sent
through the network does not have to
travel long distances.
7
WAN (Wide Area Network)
Types of Computer Networks
A WAN is a network that covers more than 48km (30 miles). WAN
networks cover large geographical areas all over the world. A WAN
network is a collection of lots of LAN networks.
Did you know?
The biggest WAN in existence is the Internet.

What topology means?
Topology
topology is a term used to define the layout or structure of a computer
network. The typology of a network can tell us how different devices are
connected.
We can tell what type of topology a computer network is by looking at the
type of information that is being shared, how much information is being
shared and how devices can store data and information.
Can you guess how many
main topology networks
there are?
5
16
There are five main types of topology networks:
Topology
bus topology
Let's have a look at the most common two in more detail…
star topology
ring topology
mesh topology
hybrid topology
However, the most common topologies are:
bus topology
star topology

Bus Topology
Topology
When a computer sends a
request for some data to all of the
devices in the network, only the
target device would respond.
For example, if a workstation sent a
document to the printer, the printer
would receive this information and
respond by printing the document.
Now that the printer has responded
all of the other devices would ignore
the request as it has been fulfilled.
A terminator is a device that
stops signals and prevents
them from being sent back
down the wire.
The devices in this type of computer network are all connected to a single
main wire and at the end of each wire they have a terminator.

Bus Topology
20
Bus Topology
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
- It is easy to implement and to add
more nodes to the network
- It is quick to set up
- It less cabling than some others
topologies so its cost effective
- It can be difficult to find out where an
error has occurred
- If there is a problem with the main
cable, the entire network stops
working
- Less secure
- Data crash might be happened
21
Star Topology
Topology
Sometimes a star topology is called an octopus topology as the switch
can have many connections (or tentacles!).
In this topology, each device is connected to a router. All communications
pass-through this router.
Top Tip:
To remember what a star topology is,
imagine an octopus represents the
switch and the octopus’ tentacles
represent the connections in the shape of
a star.
22
Star Topology
23
Star Topology
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
- Easy to install and configure
- Easy to find if there an error occurred
- It high scalable (more to expand)
- High security
- If there is a problem with the main
Hub or switch, the entire network will
be down
- High cost for big scale
