Standards and Objectives

Standards:

MS-ESS3-4. Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and

per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth’s systems.

Objectives:

Analyze trends in population data to predict future Population changes.

Investigate how a population increases generally, causes natural resources to increase.

Calculate resource consumption rates and provide an argument for what happens to resource use

when consumption and population change.

1. During what time period do you see the biggest

change in the number of people on Earth?

During the Modern Age.

(200 years ago, at the beginning of the Modern Age,

human population began to increase rapidly)

2. What factors do you think caused this change to

happen?

Population Growth Rates

Growth rate: indicates whether a population has grown and how fast it has grown.

It depends on:

The birth rate and death rate migration of people into or out of a region.

Birth rates, death rates, and growth rates are ratios.A ratio: compares one amount to another amount.

Birth rate compares the number of babies born to the total population size.

If the birth rate > death rate population will grow.

Example:

The birth rate in India in 2016 was 19 births per 1,000 people and the death rate for the was 7 deaths per

1,000 people. So, the population is grown.

Population Growth Rates

Use the graph to answer the following question:

1. Examine the trends shown in this graph. How do

trends in birth rate and death rate affect population

size?

If birth rate is greater than the death rate, the

population increases.

If death rate is greater than the birth rate, the

population decreases.

2. Do you think that all countries will follow the

population size trend shown in this graph? Explain

your reasoning.

No, because each country will have trends

that reflect the birth and death rates in that

country.

Use the graph to answer the following question:

1. What trend or trends do you see in the

population size and lumber use in the United
States from 2003 to 2010?
Lumber consumption increased as the
population increased until 2005, Then
decreased as population size increased.

2. What might these trends indicate about changes

in the use of lumber during this time period?
people used less wood to build because they
used other building materials or improved
building practices to use less wood

3. What effect would increase use of lumber have on
earth?

Animals such as birds would lose their shelter
and food source and their populations could
decline.
