What is a modal verb?

A modal verb is a verb that adds meaning or an intention to other verbs.

Modal verbs have only one form and precede a lexical verb. They can also operate as auxiliary verbs, so they can
open a question and be contracted with “not”

I could talk to him if you want → She could talk to him if I want.

If you want, could I talk to him? → If I want, could she talk to him?

I couldn’t talk to him. I don’t like him. She couldn’t talk to him, she doesn’t like him.

Will

Could/May
