The word silaturahim is taken from Arabic, "Shilah (Shilatu)" and "rahim". Shilah means connecting. Meanwhile, Rahim is kinship. Silaturahim is connecting brotherhood by doing good to close relatives.

Hadis is everything narrated by the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, either in the form of deeds or words. Hadis is the second source in Islam after the Qur’an.

Who should we stay in touch (silaturahim) with?

The first priority in connecting ties is with the closest family or family connected to nasab. Islam teaches to do good to brothers and relatives and is strictly forbidden to hurt his family’s feelings. Because, feelings of heartache that arise later may unwittingly cause a break in the relationship rope. Apart from staying in touch with family, we are also encouraged to establish good relationships with friends, teachers, and neighbors.

From Abu Hurairah (ra): "I heard the Prophet SAW say: Whoever likes to have his fortune extended and his life prolonged, let him silaturahim.”
