Let’s get down to the bare bones: You need your skeleton. The skeletal system, or framework of bones, doesn’t just hold you up. It gives your body its shape, protects your organs, and works with your muscles to help you move.

Your ribs provide a protective casing for important organs, such as your heart and lungs.

At birth, you had more than 300 bones, which fused together as you grew. By the time your body is finished growing, you’ll have about 206 bones. Researchers at Wright State University School of Medicine in Ohio have discovered that kids who exercise have stronger bones as adults.

6

joints

  • it is a place where two or more bones meet.

  • without joints, our body will not be able to move.

  • there are several types of joints ,each producing different amount of movement.

  • joins allow flexibilityand the movement of the skeleton and allow attachment between bones.

  • muscles are attached to bones by tough tissue called tendons .

types of joints

8

hinge joint

  • hinge joint is very strong ,but allow movement in one plane only .

  • it allows movement either up or down or back ward and forward

9

ball and socket joint

  • ball like surface of one bone fits into a cup like hollow in the either .

  • it allows movement in all direction hip and shoulder.

12

pivot joint

  • the rounded surface of one bone fits into a ring formed by the either .

  • it allows head to turn left and right and also move up and down .

  • ex: neck joins the head.

13

glinding joint

  • this allows bones to glide over each other, providing movement in all direction.

  • it allows side to side as well as back and forth movement

  • ex: wrist and ankles.

The stirrup bone, also called the stapes, is in the ear. It is the smallest bone in the human body.

17

CARTILGE

  • the end of bones are coverd with a tough, elastic tissue called cartilage.

  • it makes end of bones smooth and reduces friction between the bones during movement

  • it is present in upper part of ear and in front of your nose.

18

The spine is made up of 33 bones called the vertebrae.

Your body is made up of many movable bones, such as the humerus, which is located in the upper arm.The thighbone is called the femur. It’s the longest and strongest bone in your body.

How else can you bone up? Make sure your body gets enough calcium. That bone-building mineral is found in foods and drinks such as yogurt, leafy greens, and milk.
