Homework 1
Compound time, 6/8 time signatures, endings
2
What is compound time?
Compound time means counting in quavers instead of crotchets.
Counting in crotchets (a 4 on the bottom) is called simple time.
Time signatures will have an '8' on the bottom rather than a 4. For example:
6 This tells us there are six quavers in each bar
8
The quavers are usually grouped in threes

PRELEARNING: Musical Punctuation
(This will come up in future lessons)
The end of a musical phrase can sound finished or unfinished. A bit like punctuation in English.
The 'finished' sound is because the music has ended on the TONIC chord a bit like a full stop.
The 'unfinished' sound feels like there needs to be something else happening to complete the music. This is because the phrase has ended on the DOMINANT chord a bit like a comma.
