process of mummification

When a pharaoh dies it is important to prepare them for the afterlife.
The process of mummification is to ensure that the pharaoh has a safe journey to the afterlife.

steps to mummify a body

1. drain out the body

2. take out the organs (liver, stomach, intestines, lungs)

3. organs are mummified and placed in canopic jars

4. body gets dried out with natron for about 40 days

5. body is stuffed and wrapped in linen

6. the body is decorated with artificial eyes, and a mask with their face.

What's in the jar?

all four canopic jars were covered with lids representing the Four Sons of Horus.

1. Hapy: baboon-headed jar (protected the lungs)
2. IMset: human - headed jar (liver)
3. Duamutef: jackal- headed jar (stomach)
4. Qebehsenuef: falcon-headed jar (intestines)
