Adams-Onis, Convention of 1818, and Rush-Bagot Agreement

• The Adams-Onis Treaty was the treaty that created the borders of the Louisiana Purchase
  

• This is significant in expanding the U.S. influence in the region because it gave the U.S. more land

• In the Convention of 1818, the British gave up the territory that was south of the 49th parallel (latitude)
  

• This helped the U.S. because it solved territory disputes and gave the U.S. more land

• The Rush-Bagot Agreement was to get most of the American and British fleets,
  except for a couple of vessels, out of the Great Lakes
  

• America and Britain both wanted the Great Lakes for the great resources, this
  helped the trading improve and better overall relationship with Britain

How Was The Monroe Doctrine Significant

• It helped the U.S. not get involved in other countries affairs

• At first, the Monroe Doctrine was not taken seriously
  

• but then the UK helped enforce it creating a better relationship with the U.S.

• Enabled the U.S. to be able to expand the land

Political Changes in Latin America

• Most colonies in Latin America gained independence
  

• Except for Puerto Rico and Cuba

• President James Monroe did not want to recognize the new nations.

• Didn’t want to recognize them because he was unsure of their capability to
  maintain a government

Monroe Doctrine Four Key Points

• U.S. wouldn’t interfere with European affair

• The U.S. recognized and wouldn’t interfere with existing colonies in Latin America

• No one can colonize the Western Hemisphere anymore

• If any European nation tries to interfere with The U.S it would be viewed as a
  hostile act

How Did the Monroe Doctrine Affect U.S. Foreign Policy

• Forbid anyone from colonizing the western hemisphere of the U.S.

• Warns that if they try to colonize it will be a hostile act

• Recognizes the new independent republics of Latin America
