Hitler and the Nazi Party

The 1920s and 1930s were
very hard for the German
people.
The Nazi Party and their
leader, Adolf Hitler, promised
to make Germany a powerful
country again. In 1933, they
took control of the German
government.

Hitler thought that the Jews were the reason
for Germany's defeat in World
War I, and for its financial
disasters. He believed that
some races were superior to
others, and he did not think
that Jews were 'people' at all.

During World War II, the Nazis
treated Jews very badly. There
was food rationing in Germany,
and Jews received less food than other people. They had to wear a yellow star on their clothes for identification, and in some cities they were forced to live in special areas called ghettos.

Hitler wanted to exterminate all the Jews in Europe. He called this idea the Final Solution. The Nazis built camps where their enemies could be imprisoned and killed.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank was a German-Jewish teenager who
was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust.

Anne Frank was born in
Germany in 1929. In 1933, her
Jewish family moved to
Amsterdam, in the
Netherlands, to escape Hitler's
persecution. When Germany
invaded the Netherlands in
1940, Anne's parents knew that
they were in danger again. In
the summer of 1942, when
Anne was 13 years old, the
family decided that it was time
to hide, so they prepared some
secret rooms above their
business offices.

She and her family, along
with four others, spent 25
months during World War II
hiding in rooms above her
father’s office in
Amsterdam, the
Netherlands.
Friends went shopping for
them, brought them food
and helped them. Anne
wanted to be a writer.
While she was hiding, she
wrote a diary about her
frightening experience, but
also about her normal
feelings as a teenager.

In 1944, the Nazis discovered the Frank family. Anne and her sister
Margot were sent to a death camp. The conditions in the death camps
were terrible and millions of people died in them between 1940 and
1945.

Nine months after she was arrested, Anne Frank died of typhus in
March of 1945 at Bergen-Belsen. She was fifteen years old.
Her sister Margot died too.

Anne's father, who was separated from his family in the
death camps, survived the war.

Anne's diary was finally published in 1947. It is now one of the most popular books in the world, and it has been translated into more than 60 different languages. Anne Frank's life, and death, will never be forgotten.
