Dalam kehidupan sehari – hari , kita tidak mungkin terlepas dari kegiatan aritmetika sosial. Dalam aritmetika sosial ini dibahas tentang kegiatan penjualan, pembelian, keuntungan, kerugian, bunga, pajak, bruto, netto dan tara. Dalam perdagangan dikenal istilah – istilah :
a. Harga beli (HB) adalah banyak uang yang dibayarkan oleh pembeli ketika membeli barang.
b. Harga jual (HJ) adalah uang yang diperoleh penjual setelah menjual barang.
c Untung / Laba (U) diperoleh jika harga jual lebih besar dari harga beli, .
