Synthesizing

When you synthesize, you put together information

from different parts of the text to create new

understanding.

The BIG

Idea

What does it all mean

to me?

13

Why do readers synthesize?

It helps readers gain deeper comprehension

It allows readers to infer new conclusions

It is a critical skill for making connections across

texts

My Thinking

Every child needs to eat,
yet so many lack access
to adequate healthy food
and clean water.

My Synthesis

When
synthesizing,
our thinking
changes and we
form new ideas.

It makes me realize how
lucky I am to have lots of
food around me very often
(snack, milk, breakfast…)

I realize there is a lot I have in my life that so many kids
don’t have. The next time I cook food, or drink clean
water I will be sure to take a moment to appreciate these
blessings and think of those less fortunate. When I next
go grocery shopping, I may consider picking up some
extra non-perishable food items to donate to
organizations working to end childhood hunger.

Composting food waste like fruit
peels, egg shells, and stale bread
creates a natural fertilizer that can
enrich soil. By composting
leftovers instead of trashing them,
people can reduce landfill waste
and greenhouse gases those
scraps would emit. Turning
discarded food into usable
compost is an earth-friendly way
to transform trash into treasure.

What can the reader conclude about the
benefits of composting food waste?

A.

Composting scraps requires too much
time and effort.

B.

Composting offers no environmental
benefits over trashing food.

C.

Composting reduces waste and
repurposes discarded food.

D.

Composted soil lacks adequate nutrients
for gardens.

Text

My Thinking

My Synthesis

I’m connecting the
evidence about
landfill food waste to
synthesize that
landfill plays a role in
climate change, that
we aim to improve.

By composting
leftovers instead of
trashing them, people
can reduce landfill
waste and greenhouse
gases those scraps
would emit.

This information tells
me sending scraps
directly to landfills
leads to pile-ups of
waste and gas
emissions, contributing
to environmental
issues.

I can conclude that landfills themselves are likely
contributors to the environmental problems
composting aims to reduce.
