​The verb "haber" in Spanish is primarily used as an auxiliary(helper) verb to form compound tenses like the perfect tenses (e.g., he comido - I have eaten). It's also used to indicate existence or occurrence of something, often translated as "there is" or "there are" (e.g., hay un libro - there is a book). Additionally, it can function as an impersonal verb, meaning it doesn't have a specific subject (e.g., hay que estudiar - one must study). We will go over mostly the basic usage in this lesson.

• Haber is often used as a helper verb

• When it is used as a helper verb it makes the tense "perfect": for example Present Perfect.

• Also when used as a helper verb it is paired with past participle of a verb

• When Haber is not used as a helper verb it can mean "to exist" or "to be"

​Haber: Helper Examples

1. Present Perfect: Yo he estudiado toda la tarde. (I have studied all afternoon.)

2. Present Perfect: Ellas han llegado temprano a la reunión. (They have arrived early to the meeting.)

3. Future Perfect: Para el próximo año, habrán construido nuevas carreteras. (By next year, they will have built new roads.)

4. Future Perfect: Nosotros habremos terminado el proyecto para la fecha límite. (We will have finished the project by the deadline.)

5. Past Perfect: Él había comido antes de ir al cine. (He had eaten before going to the movies.)

6. Past Perfect: Habíamos limpiado la casa antes de que llegaran los invitados. (We had cleaned the house before the guests arrived.)

1. Hay muchos libros en la biblioteca. (There are many books in the library.)

2. Había mucha gente en la fiesta. (There were many people at the party.)

3. Habrá una reunión mañana. (There will be a meeting tomorrow.)

4. Había un error en el informe. (There was an error in the report.)

5. No hay suficiente comida para todos. (There is not enough food for everyone.)

6. ¿Qué ha pasado aquí? (What has happened here?)
