HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF HANDBALL
Handball game was introduced in Germany by a Gymastic master called Korad Koch. The Greeks and Romans called Handball "CATCHBALL".
In 1919 Karl Schelenz, was the first to call the game "HANDBALL". He designed uniform rules for the game.
Karl Schelenz was a Physical Education teacher in Berlin, Germany where he reduced the size of the field that was so large to 40m by 20m. This earned him the name "Father of Handball", since then the dimension has been adopted as an international size.

The first match was played between Austria and Germany in September 1925.
Handball is both an indoor and outdoor game.
The game was first introduced into the Olympics of 1936 at Berlin and in 1972 held in Germany.
In 1972, the Handball Federation of Nigeria was formed.
In 1976, Nigeria first took part in the Olympic games that was held in Montreal Canada.

NATURE OF HAND BALL
The game is started with a throw off at the center by any of the team that wins the toss. After the pass, the players can use the various skills to dislodge their opponents. The game is played by two teams of 7 players each. Five substitutes or reserve players are allowed. The duration of the game is 60 minutes i.e 30 minutes per halve and 10 minutes rest at half time.

Referee:- They are two referee in number that controls the conduct of the game
a)The referee is in charge of the game from the moment they enter the court until they leave
b) The referee as well examines the condition of the court/playing area before the beginning of the game.
Time keeper:- They notify the coach of the offending team when suspension is over.
Scorer:- a) They keep the record of the game.
b) They ensure that the score sheets are signed by the official and two referees.
c) They work together with the referee.
d) They work cooperatively with the time keeper.

RULES OF HANDBALL
6. Only the goalkeeper is given the privilege to touch the ball with any parts of his or her body within the goal line.
7. A goal cannot be scored directly from the throwing area.
8. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area.
9. Any ball that enters the net without touching the player is not a goal.
10. Any player gaining possession of the ball shall not take more than three steps before the release of the ball.
These includes;
1.A match consists of two periods of 30 minutes each.
2. Each team consists of seven players.
3. Every player must be in his own half of the court at the start of the and when a goal is scored.
4. Once a player receives a pass he can pass or shoot.
5. The game is played with the hands only.
