NUcleotide

The building blocks of DNA and RNA. Made of 1 sugar, 1 phosphate group, and 1 nitrogen base.

Deoxyribose

Sugar that is found in nucleotides in DNA

Nitrogen Base

Bases that give nucleotides their names. Cytosine, guanine, thymine, adenine, and uracil (ONLY IN RNA).

Antiparallel

Two strands of DNA run opposite directions. One starts with sugar and ends with phosphate and vise versa.

Semiconservative

When DNA is replicated, one strand of DNA is used as a template for the new strand being built.

Helicase

Enzyme that "unzips" DNA by breaking hydrogen bonds between bases.

DNA POlymerase

Enzyme that adds new complementary bases to the growing replicated DNA strand.

Ligase

Enzyme that "glues" fragments on the lagging strand together during DNA Replication

Replication Fork

The place where the two strands of DNA are being unzipped by the enzyme helicase during replication
