​Emergence of Political Parties

(1950s):

In the 1950s, political parties began to form in Belize, reflecting a growing desire for self-governance. The People's United Party (PUP) and the National Party (NP) were the two main parties.

​Constitutional Reforms (1960s):

Belize underwent constitutional reforms during the 1960s, leading to

internal self-government in 1964 and full independence from Britain in

1981. These reforms laid the foundation for democratic governance.

​Multiparty Democracy (1980s):

(1980s): Belize established itself as a multiparty democracy, with the PUP and the United Democratic Party (UDP) becoming the dominant parties. Regular elections were held, and power shifted between these parties.

Strengthening Democratic Institutions

Belize developed a strong framework for democratic governance,

including a parliamentary system, an independent judiciary, and a free press. It also established the Belize Election and

Boundaries Commission to oversee elections and the PCC is currently in the first phase of modernizing the constitution to uphold democratic

principles.
