This is what happens when a place or

no accountability.

Often times, the place or resource

Mini- Lesson

11

12

media

Imagine that you are enjoying a bowl of popcorn.

What happens once the popcorn is gone?
How could you make this one bowl last longer?

Making this one bowl last longer would be seeking sustainability for this popcorn serving.

Mini- Lesson

13

media

Well, we could pop more popcorn, right?

If only consuming non-renewable energy sources were as simple as ‘making more’ then we
wouldn’t be as concerned about the ‘finite’ or ‘limited’ amounts.

Mini- Lesson

14

media

Unlike popcorn, non-renewable energy resources can take hundreds to millions to billions of
years to create. Simply stated, they are not recovered within a human lifespan.

Recall
Nonrenewable Energy Resources:

Mini- Lesson

Can you identify

each?

16

media

The four main sources of
nonrenewable energy are
depicted below. These are
resources that we use for
electricity but which are
limited due to the amount of
these available resources on
the planet. They are often
called 'fossil fuels' because
they are the product of fossils
and organic matter being
trapped and compressed
beneath the earth for millions
of years. The exception to this
is nuclear energy, which uses
the metal uranium.

Assess the significance of the evolution of decomposers on the production of coal.

1
  • Decomposers prevent coal from forming in present day.

2
  • Decomposers prevented coal from forming in the past.

3
  • Decomposers increase coal formation in present day.

20

media

How is Nuclear Energy made?

Nuclear fission uses

uranium to create energy.

Nuclear energy is a

‘nonrenewable’ resource
because once the uranium

is used, it is gone!

Sustainable Energy

What is it?

• Sustainable energy is derived from resources that can maintain current

operations without jeopardizing the energy needs or climate of future
generations.

• The most popular natural sources of sustainable energy, including wind, solar

and hydropower, are also renewable.

Claim

We are getting better in the United States with our environmentally
sustainable practices. We have reduced waste, we have reduced
depletion, we have reduced degradation of our natural resources.

Examine the statementThe image below demonstrates the various forms of
energy used to produce electricity. It projects about 80 years into the future,
demonstrating the best path forward for human energy consumption. Some
of these resources are renewable and some are nonrenewable. Keep in mind
that utilizing nonrenewable resources being phased out in this projection and
conservation is the best practice for sustainability. (CCS = carbon capture and
storage (prevents harmful carbon from entering the atmosphere))

What is the reasoning?

Using fossil fuels for energy resources?
Let’s find out

Believe it or not

China uses more renewable energy then USA.

Agree

Poll

China is leading renewable energy push

agree

disagree

31

media

China uses mostly nonrenewable energy

Does this risks outweigh the benefits

Research what effects does China’s use of coal factories do?

Why is coal still being used?

IS China or are other places using nonrenewable energy?

Energy Efficiency is a
measure of energy

produced compared to

energy consumed.
Thermal conversion
machines can turn no

more than 40% of

energy in primary fuel

into electricity or

mechanical power due

to waste heat.

32

media

Fossil fuels-How long will it last?

Are they being replaced?

Are they more efficient?

33

media

Efficiency checklist

We will use this chart to rate a
renewable resource.

1. its efficiency either percent like
15% efficient

Replenish rate as renewable
energy resources do replenish.
Some factors like intermittency
play a role more than others. If
intermittency cannot be
controlled than it is a medium
replenish rate

Low rate is if it is dependent on
factors that can be wiped out .
For example, a pig methane
farm.

efficiency

Replenish rate

cost

34

media

Similar to the Tragedy of the Commons…

The way we treat our common Nonrenewable Energy resources matters.

When we misuse these resources, the result is waste and degradation
