2
WALT: Students will be able to understand how the early democracies of Rome and Athens inspired the American Government by taking the guided reading notes and analyzing an article with their group.
EQ: Why do new governments adopt a Representative Democracy instead of a Direct Democracy?
3
Ancient Athens
Government started as a Monarchy, then transformed to an Oligarchy, Dictatorship, and finally a DIRECT Democracy.
Athens was a CITY STATE and therefore Direct Democracy was successful
Countries are too big today for Direct Democracies.
All citizens in Athens could participate in voting.
Majority rules and each vote could decide important issues.

Ancient Rome
Representative Democracy or a Republic
Tribes and groups of people would appoint someone to represent their group in government.
Done in larger societies/countries. Modern day USA
Ancient Rome had three social classes.
Patricians-people in upper class social ranking (priests, landowners, government officials.) 10% of population
Plebians-common people (laborers, artisans, farmers) (bribed)
Slaves-people captured in war, had no representation in government.
