1.1 Was / Were

When?

We use was and were when we talk about our state of being (to be) in the past.
Ex. I was at home.
My sister was not in school.
They were at a themepark.

I / He / She /It - Was not / Wasn't
Ex. She wasn't in school.

You / We / They - Were not / Weren't
Ex. They weren't in class.

Negative

I / He / She / It - Was
Ex. I was at home.

Ex. We were at a themepark.

Positive: Yes, subject + was / were.

Negative: No, subject + wasn't / weren't.

Past Simple Tense

When ?

We use the Past Simple to talk about things that did or did not happen at a certain time in the past.

Ex. I lived in Utrecht last year.
Ex. My brother played a soccermatch last weekend.

Signal words: Last year, last weekend, three hours ago, when I was young, in 1991

did not / didn't + verb

Ex. My sister didn't go to work last week.

Ex. They didn't walk to school.

Ex. I worked at Mac Donalds last year.

Ex. We walked home after school yesterday.

Past Simple - Short Answers

Short answers:

Positive: Yes, subject + did

Did you see the game last night? Yes, I did.

Negative: No, subject + did not / didn't

Did Sheila brush her teeth this morning? No, she didn't
