Achtung! Caution!
Some one syllable adjectives/adverbs do NOT take an Umlaut in the comparative and superlative forms! (voll, laut, bunt...)
Adjectives ending in -el drop the e in the comparative form:
dunkel dunkler am dunkelsten
According to the rules, groß should take an e before the superlative ending, BUT IT DOESN'T.
groß größer am größten (but heiß heißer am heißesten)
