Phileas Fogg, a rich man from London, is very particular about his daily routines. He hires Passepartout, who wants a calm life without surprises. Fogg makes a bet that he can travel all around the world in just 80 days for a lot of money. His friends don't believe he can do it. Fogg starts his journey with Passepartout, but Passepartout is surprised and worried because it's unexpected for him.

Chapter 1

Many people bet against Fogg, thinking he can't do it. Detective Fix follows Fogg, thinking he's a thief who stole money from a bank. At a place called the Suez Canal, Fix mistakes Passepartout for the thief. Fix tries to stop Fogg's passport from getting a stamp, but he can't. Fix decides to follow Fogg to Bombay because he thinks Fogg is a thief. The police start to think maybe Fogg really is the thief.

Passepartout Does Something Very Wrong

As the steamship made its way east, Fogg stayed inside. He did not look out the windows or talk with other people. He played whist. One morning Passepartout was surprised to see Fix. Passepartout did not know Fix was a detective. He thought Fix was his friend. "I think Mr. Fogg will stop in India," said Passepartout. "He must see that his trip around the world can't be made in so little time. He needs to save his money!" "That is not Fogg's money!" thought Fix. "That is the bank's money! I will watch Fogg. But I will not let Fogg see me!"

Detective Fix hurried to the police. But London's warrant had not come! "Give me one of your warrants!" said Fix. "Fogg did not break any law in India," the police said. "Your warrant must come from London." "Passepartout thinks they will stay here," thought Fix. "The warrant will come in time." But Passepartout no longer thought Fogg would stop his trip. Fogg was two days early. "We may go around the world faster than 80 days!" thought Passepartout. "This trip is fun

Passepartout walked into a pagoda with his shoes on. In India, people show respect by taking off their shoes when they go inside a pagoda. The British respected the ways of the people. So when he walked in with his shoes on, he was breaking British law! Three priests pulled him down. They took his shoes. Passepartout jumped up. He ran to the train. "I did not know I had to take off my shoes!" Passepartout told Fogg. "I thought the priests were going to break me in two! I got away. But I could not save my shoes! Those priests have them!"

Fix was not on the train, but he was next to the train near the window. He could hear all that Passepartout said. "Fogg did not break the law in India," thought Fix. "But Passepartout did! The Calcutta police will put them into prison!"

Fix watched the train pull away. On the train, Fogg played whist with Sir Francis. They had met before on the steamship traveling to Bombay. When the train stopped in a town, Fogg looked up. "Here is money to buy shoes," he told Passepartout.

Passepartout came back with pretty red slippers. "This is all that I could find!" Passepartout said, but he looked down at his feet as if he liked his new slippers.

The next morning, Sir Francis asked what time it was. Passepartout told him the time on his watch. "Your watch is wrong!" said Sir Francis. "You must change it from London time! We are traveling east. The sun is traveling the other way. It is three in the morning in London. But four more hours than that have gone by in India."

"My watch is never wrong," said Passepartout. The train stopped in a little town. "This is as far as this railroad goes," a man told them. "You must find a way to Allahabad. That railroad goes to Calcutta." "The newspapers said this railroad goes all the way to Calcutta," said Fogg. "The newspapers were wrong," said the man. "We can't get to Allahabad!" said Passepartout. "We have lost the bet!"
