Past Simple tense หรือทีบางครั้งแรกว่า อดีตกาล ใช้เพื่อบอกให้ทราบถึงสิ่งที่เกิดและเสร็จสิ้นไปแล้วในช่วงเวลาก่อนหน้านี้ในภาษาอังกฤษ Simple past tense เป็นรูปพื้นฐานของ tense ที่ใช้บอกอดีต (past tense) โดยเวลาของสิ่งที่ถูกพูดถึงเกิดขึ้นนั้นอาจจะพึ่งเกิดและเสร็จสิ้นไปเมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ หรือเกิดและเสร็จสิ้นไปนานแล้วก็ได้  

โครงสร้างประโยคบอกเล่า (Positive sentence)




ตัวอย่าง
- He passed her examination because he studied very hard
- She went to market last week.
- I saw him a few days ago

โครงสร้างประโยคปฏิเสธ (Negative sentence)




ตัวอย่าง
- They didn’t invite her to the party, so she didn’t go.
- I called him but he didn’t answer me.

โครงสร้างประโยคคำถาม (Question sentence)




ตัวอย่าง
A: Did you enjoy the film last night?

B: I didn’t enjoy much. So, I went to the party instead.
A: Didn’t you do anything at the weekend?

B: Yes, I didn’t do anything.

หลักการใช้ Past Simple Tense  
1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์หรือการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลงไปแล้วในอดีต ซึ่งมักจะมีคำ กลุ่มคำหรืออนุประโยคต่อไปนี้ อยู่ในประโยค เช่น
- ago - last night - when he was young
- once - last year - when he was five years old - yesterday - yesterday morning
- when I lived in Thailand

ตัวอย่างประโยค
1. I lived in Trang 3 years ago.
2. His father died during the war.
3. He learned English when he was young.
4. I worked at that bank for five years.
5. Kookkai and Nok talked on the phone for thirty minutes.

หลักการใช้ Past Simple Tense  
2. ใช้กับการกระทำอันเป็นนิสัยหรือเคยปฏิบัติมาในอดีต แต่ปัจจุบันไม่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว เช่น
- John lived in Manchester when he was young.
- In the old days we could travel all over Bangkok by boat.
- Did your father smoke when he was young?
- No, he didn't.

หลักการใช้ Past Simple Tense  
3. ใช้กับคำว่า used to ซึ่งแสดงถึงการกระทำอันเป็นนิสัย หรือเคยปฏิบัติมาแล้วในอดีต และในปัจจุบันการกระทำอันนั้นมิได้เกิดขึ้นอีก used to + V1
(= เคยมาแล้วในอดีต) เช่น
- Mr. Smith used to teach in Japan. (But now he teaches in Thailand.)
- In the past people used to travel on foot much more often.
- You used to live in that house , didn't you?
