​PLURAL OF SPANISH NOUNS

​Unlike English, the plural of Spanish nouns is not complicated.

​Can you state the plural of the following words in English?

cat

​Spanish is much easier by comparison. Just follow a few rules.

Rule 1: If a noun ends in a vowel, add -s​

​Por ejemplo:

la mochila > las mochilas

​(the bookbag) (the bookbags)

​el diccionario > los diccionarios

​(the dictionary) (the dictionaries)

​

​el bolígrafo > los bolígrafos

​(the pen) (the pens)

​

​OJO (Watch out): EL and LA change to plural as well (LOS and LAS).

​RULE 2: If a noun ends in a consonant (except z), add -es

​​Por ejemplo:

el papel > los papeles

​(the paper) (the papers)

​el profesor > los profesores

​(the teacher) (the teachers)

​el reloj > los relojes

​(the clock) (the clocks)

​OJO (Watch out): Again, EL and LA change to LOS and LAS.

​RULE 3: If a noun ends in -z, change the z to c, then add -es

​​Por ejemplo:

el lápiz > los lápices

​(the pencil) (the pencils)

la luz > las luces

​(the light) (the lights)

​Rule 4: If a word ends in -ción or -sión, drop the accent after adding -es.

​​​Por ejemplo:

la nación > las naciones

​(the nation) (the nations)

​la canción > las canciones

​(the song) (the songs)

la visión > las visiones

​(the vision) (the visions)
