Introduction.
Fulani, also called Peul or Fulbe, a
primarily Muslim people scattered
throughout many parts of Africa, mostly
in West Africa from Lake Chad in the
east to the Atlantic coast. They are
concentrated principally in Nigeria, Mali,
Guinea, Senegal, and Niger but can also
be found in several other countries. The
Fulani language, known as Fula, is
classified within the Atlantic branch of
the Niger-Congo language family.

Who are the Fulani
People?
The Fula people, often described as the Fulani, are regarded as the
world’s largest nomadic group: about 20 million people dispersed across
Western Africa. They reside mostly in Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon,
Senegal, and Niger. They also can be found in Central African Republic
and Egypt.
In Nigeria, the Fulani comprise “the most populous and politically
influential” of more than 250 ethnic groups in the country. They speak
Fula languages as well as Hausa, English, French and Arabic. Nigeria’s
president, Muhammadu Buhari, is ethnic Fulani.
The centuries-old Fulani heritage is pastoral, organized primarily around
nomadic herding of cattle, sheep and goats, though segments of the
Fulani farm crops or live in urban areas.
The Fulani were early adopters of Islam, participating in holy wars, or
jihads, in the 16th Century that established them as a dominant social
and economic force in Western Africa.

History of The Fulani People.
The History of the Fulani People.
The origins of the Fulani people are unclear and various theories have
been postulated. Some scholars on Fulani History and the Sokoto
Caliphate have traced the lineage of the Torankawa clan (Torodbe) of the
Fulani to the Arab conqueror Uqba ibn Nafi. As a nomadic herding
people, they have moved through and among many other cultures. The
first recorded Fulani kingdom was the Kingdom of Tekrur in southern
Mauritania and northern Senegal.
Walter Rodney in his book The History of the Upper Guinea Coast, argues
that Fulbe are originally from North Africa and they conquered the Foota
Djallon region led by the Fulani Koli Tenguella.

Facts About The Fulani People’s History
1. According to historians the Fulanis migrated from the North and East to
present day Senegal. In the 10th century they spread to most parts of West and
Central Africa and Sudan (being the only East African country. It is debatable
though that there may be Fulanis on the edge of Ethiopia.
2. There are two major groups of Fulani:
-The nomadic pastoral Fulani (mbororo’en) who move about with their cattle.
They have no interest in civilization and live simply to sustain their cattle and
family. It is unlikely that will pass the same place twice in their lifetime.
– The settled Fulani (Fulbe wuro).
The pastoral Fulani (full-time cattle keepers) who live permanently in villages
and cities. They participate in every aspect of civilization from education to
farming, socializing and citizenship.
3. Because of their original pastoral lifestyle, their lives and organization were
controlled by the needs of their herds.
