VOCABULARY ENVIROMENTAL ISSUES AND SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability

The ability to create mental images, ideas, or concepts that are not present in the immediate physical environment. In the context of environmental education, imagination can be used to envision and design sustainable futures.

Imagination

The act or process of changing or converting something into a different form or state. In environmental education, transformation refers to the shift in attitudes, behaviors, and systems towards sustainability.

Transformation

The act of going beyond or breaking established boundaries or norms. In the context of environmental education, transgression involves challenging existing unsustainable practices and exploring alternative approaches.

Transgression

The understanding of the interconnections and interdependencies between living organisms and their environment, including the recognition of the impacts of human activities on ecosystems.

Ecological Awareness

The ability to understand and analyze complex systems, such as ecosystems and social systems, and recognize the interconnectedness of various components within those systems.

Systems Thinking

The capacity of a system to withstand disturbances or shocks and recover quickly. In the context of sustainability, resilience refers to the ability of social, economic, and ecological systems to adapt and thrive in the face of change.

Resilience

Active participation in community and societal issues, including environmental and sustainability initiatives, through actions such as volunteering, advocacy, and responsible citizenship.
