• Make up the upper and lower jaw as well as

the structure of the face

• Include the:

– mandible
– maxilla
– palatine
– Zygomatic

Your nose and ears are not made of bone; they are made of cartilage, a flexible
substance which is not as hard as bone.

Rib Cage

●Is a protective shield around the organs of
the upper body

Is composed of the: Sternum & Ribs

●Ribs

--12 pair of thin flat curved bones which
connect to the sternum

--classified as true ribs, false ribs or floating
ribs.

●Sternum

--Xyphoid Process (pointed end)

Vertebral Column Functions

Cervical vertebra

●framework for the neck and support the head

●Atlas & axis

Thoracic vertebra

●form the rear anchor of the rib cage

Lumbar vertebra

support the body’s weight and are attached to many of
the back muscles

Sacral vertebra

●forms the back wall of the pelvic girdle

Coccyx vertebrae (tailbone)

●serve as a connection site for muscles
