Western Pioneers

Adjusting to Life on the Plains

The Great Plains and western prairies is a vast region located between the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains.

During the late 1800s, railroad construction and development stimulated growth. In 1862, the government encouraged settlement passing the Homestead Act - for a small fee, an individual could buy a tract of public land available for settlement

New Farming Technology

The harsh, dry climate and densely packed soil of the Great Plains required new farming methods.

Dry farming - a way of farming dry land in which seeds are planted deep in the ground

Sodbuster - a name given to Great Plains farmers

Bonanza farm - a large, highly profitable wheat farm
