When Sinixt people tried to access their traditional lands, and assert their hunting and gathering rights, the new settlers referred to them as American Indians, and did not welcome them here, or recognize their rights."

Revelstoke, then known as Farwell, was founded in 1885. Like wild west town in the movies, there was one main business street named Front Street. In 1886, Farwell was renamed to Revelstoke in honor of a Lord Revelstoke. In March of 1899, Revelstoke was incorporated as a city. Because its role as a railway center, Revelstoke was once one of the largest and most prominent communities in the interior of the province.
