French and Indian War

• war between England and France over territory in North America. English victory resulted in large expansion of British colonies but angered many colonists as an unnecessary war (ended salutary neglect)

Sugar Act

Increased regulations on Sugar (and related products) coming into the colonies

The Stamp Act

• colonists were required to pay a tax on official documents

an act that allowed British soldiers to stay in the houses and buildings of colonists without permission

Townshend Act

A series of laws and taxes passed by England to raise money and increase trade regulations

​The Tea Act

A law that required colonists to purchase English tea instead of products on the open market

Boston Tea Party

A group of colonists, dressed as Mohawk Indians, dumped 342 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor.

In retaliation, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, which the colonists called the Intolerable Acts.
