​Three Steps to Finding Subjects and Verbs

1. ​Find any prepositional phrases to get them out of the way. Subjects and verbs will NEVER be inside of prepositional phrases.

2. Find the verb first!

3. Ask yourself who or what did that. The answer will be your subject.

​With determination, he climbed the rugged mountain.

Step 1: Remove prepositional phrases.
(With determination,) he climbed the rugged mountain.
