Procedure
Step 1
• Take two
wooden blocks
and place them
some distance
part them
some apart.
Place the
mirror over the
second block.
Step 2
• Put the other
end of the rod
on the other
block and
attach a round
pencil to the
copper rod with
the help of a
needle placed
under the rod.
Step 3
• Now, place the
round pencil as
a pointer on a
scale, and
arrange the
whole set-up
as shown in
the diagram.

•Heat the copper rod with the help of
candles, arranged in a tray
containing sand, and absorb

Observations
The pointer (round pencil) changes its direction while heating the copper rod.

The movement of the pointer depicts that solid expand on heating.
