• One atom becomes a positive ion

• The other becomes a negative ion

• They attract each other and form a bond

Ionic Bonding

• Ionic bonds usually form between a metal atom and a nonmetal atom

• There are certainly a lot of metals!

Examples of Ionic Compounds

Covalent Bond - a bond formed when electrons are shared between atoms

• Neither atom will let go of the electrons

• They get stuck together in a "tug-of-war"
