TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

It refers to teaching English to non-native English speakers either Abroad or in English-speaking countries, though it is most often used to refer to language instruction that occurs in English-speaking countries.

TEFL vs. TESOL

• Essentially they mean the same thing:

  Teaching English to non-native speakers.

• Certification in Native land / Overseas

• fastest-growing educational sectors

• A particular form of procedure for accomplishing or approaching something, especially systematic or established

• Systematic:

  • Established strategies

  • Guiding ideas that inform instruction (theories of language and language learning)

• The connections between a teacher’s classroom practice to the beliefs that are responsible for those actions.

• It is the activities, tasks, and learning experiences used by the teacher within the teaching and learning process.

• It is the dynamic, creative, and exploratory neuroeducation learning process.

• A broad theoretical or philosophical perspective.

• A way of dealing with something.

• A way of looking at teaching and learning, a theoretical view of what language is, and of how it can be learned.

• A way of doing something by using special knowledge or skill.

• A technique is a skill and ability in a practical activity that you develop through training and practice.

Why study TESOL Methods?

Larsen-Freeman and Anderson (2011) present the following reasons for studying methods:

• Serve as a tool for reflection

• Help teachers choose to teach differently and/or modify their practice

• Develop a knowledge base, allowing teachers to join a Community of Practice (PLCs)

• Continually reflect and refresh teaching

• Expand a teacher’s repertoire of techniques

• Can help teachers articulate and transform their understanding of the teaching and learning process

What is the difference between a language objective and a content objective?

• Language Objectives:

“Students will be able to” (SWBAT) + concrete measurable outcome + language to be learned

• Content Objectives:

“Students will be able to” (SWBAT) + concrete measurable outcome + content to be learned

• Examples:

• Students will be able to learn past participles

• Students will be able to understand addition and subtraction
