A leave of absence of up to 2 weeks may be granted by the LPN Coordinator on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances. Students must make up missed assignments, exams, and clinical requirements upon return. Abuse or falsification of a leave request may result in dismissal from the LPN program.

Students may receive credit for previous coursework if they:

  • Meet all SouthernTech LPN admission requirements.

  • Earned a grade of C or higher in equivalent coursework completed within the last 5 years.

  • Submit official transcripts (and other documents if requested).

  • Attend the required summer transition workshop if accepted.

​American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Provider. Expires in 2 years. REQUIRED: To attend clinical and prior to course starting. Is offered free to LPN student over summer.

Have reliable/dependable transportation to and from SouthernTech and/or clinical facilities. 

It is your responsibility to maintain modern and reliable access to technology that will enable you to complete the required program activities on and off campus. 

Maintain a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider CPR card throughout the program.

Applicants age 18 and older must complete a mandatory background check and drug test through CastleBranch.com at a combined cost of $95 to meet healthcare facility and accreditation requirements. Felony charges, sex offender registration, or government sanctions may require official court records and could result in denial of admission if the student is determined unable to complete clinical requirements or qualify for national licensure.

IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to get any issues resolved or could affect admission to any health program.

Criminal History

All Southern Tech Licensed Practical Nursing students must complete a 12-panel urine drug test through a facility partnered with CastleBranch.com to meet Mercy Memorial Health Center clinical requirements and help maintain a safe learning and healthcare environment. Dilute test results must be retaken; otherwise, they will be considered positive.

Students may be required to submit to additional testing in the following situations:
 

  • Reasonable Suspicion Testing. 

  • Post-Accident Testing. 

  • Random Testing.

Students may be dismissed from the LPN program based on the following violations:

  • Violation of Southern Tech and/or LPN Handbook policies and rules

  • Medication errors violating the Nurse Practice Act

  • Violations of drug testing, attendance, testing, or conduct policies

  • Three incident reports
