Father: What are you reading, Meg? You’ve
been reading that since 10 a.m.

メグ，何を読んでいるの？朝の10時からずっとそれを読
んでいるようだけど。

Meg: It’s a book about haiku. It’s a
little difficult, but it’s interesting.

メグ： 俳句についての本だよ。ちょっと難しいけど，
おもしろいの。

Haiku have been an important part of
Japanese culture since the Edo period.

俳句は江戸時代から日本文化の重要な一部と
なっている。

Japanese people have been writing
haiku for centuries.

日本人は何世紀にもわたって俳句を書き続
けている。

Haiku are different from
traditional English poems.

俳句は伝統的な英語の詩とは異なってい
る。

First, they are not written in sentences.
They use only a few words.

Second, the lines do not have to rhyme.

Third, a seasonal word must be included.

第1に，俳句は文で書かれない。ごくわずかの語を使う。

第2に，行は韻を踏む必要がない。

第3に，季語が含まれていなければならない。

On the other hand, like most English
poems, rhythm is very important.

一方，ほとんどの英語の詩と同様，リズムは非常に
重要である。

Haiku use three lines ― five, seven,
and five syllables long.

俳句は5・7・5の音節からなる3行を用いる。
