we use it to describe an action in progress at a specific moment in the past.

To form the verb we need to put verb BE in the past and add ing to the main verb.
WAS/WERE + Ving

1. It is a long action.

2. We need to show the period of time.
   a) from 5 till 6 yesterday / all day yesterday / while / when
   b) the period can be stopped by another action in the past (Past Simple)

​She was cooking all evening yesterday.

She was cooking when dad called.
