 1. must/ can’t  สรุปเหตุการณ์อย่างสมเหตุสมผล

 2. may/ might/ could  บอกความเห็นไปได้ในปัจจุบันหรืออดีต

 3. modals (must, can’t, may, might) + be + ving

 1. must/ can’t  สรุปเหตุการณ์อย่างสมเหตุสมผล

 must = เป็นไปได้อย่างสมเหตุสมผล (อาจแปลว่า ต้องเป็น..แน่ ๆ, ต้องทํา..แน่ ๆ)

 can’t = เมื่อพิจารณาเหตุผลไม่น่าเป็นไปได้ (อาจแปลว่า เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะ..แน่ ๆ, ทํา.....ไม่ได้แน่ ๆ)

 He must be exhausted. He hasn’t slept for 24 hours!

 Sue can’t have a ten-year-old daughter! She’s only 24!

 Aren’t they answering? They must be in bed. They can’t be out this
late.

 2. may/ might/ could  บอกความเห็นไปได้ในปัจจุบันหรืออดีต

 รูปปฏิเสธของ may/ might คือเติม not  may not/ might not

 ไม่ค่อยนิยมใช้ couldn’t เพื่ อแปลว่าไม่น่าจะเป็น (ใช้เป็น may not/ might not แทน)

 He might be lost. Or he may be stuck in traffic.

 We may go to Greece for our holiday. We haven’t decided yet.

 Take your umbrella. It might rain later.

 I might not be able to come tonight. I might have to work late.

 They may not know where we are.

เพื่อบอกความเป็นไปได้ในปัจจุบันและอนาคต

 You must be joking!

 They can’t still be eating!

 They may be coming on a later train.

10.2 Asking about possibilities
(ใช้ถามคําถามเกี่ยวกับความเป็นไปได้)

 ในการถามคําถามเกี่ยวกับเป็นไปได้ นิยมถามคําถาม “Do you think… ?”

Do you think she is married?

She can’t be.

Where do you think he is from?

He might be Portuguese.

 หากต้องการใช้ Modal (may, might, could) ในคําถาม จะใช้ร่วมกับ “Do you think…?”

Do you think he might be Portuguese?

 1. น่าจะได้ทํา/ ต้องได้ทํา ในอดีต (สรุปคือไม่ได้ทํา)

 3. น่าจะได้ทํา/ ต้องได้ทํา ในอดีต อย่างต่อเนื่อง (สรุปคือไม่ได้ทํา)

 He must have been exhausted. (must = ต้อง.....แน่ ๆ)

 She can’t have told him about us yet. (can = สามารถเป็นไปได้/ can’t = ไม่
สามารถเป็นไปได้)

The letter may have got lost in the past. (may = อาจจะเป็นไปได้)

He might have changed his mind. (might = อาจจะเป็นไปได้บ้าง)

They could have moved house. (could = น่าจะสามารถเป็นไปได้)

 3. ใช้รูปแบบ Modals (must, may, might, could) + have + been + ving เพื่อ
แปลว่าน่าจะได้ทําอยู่แล้วอย่างต่อเนื่อง

 She must have been joking. (หล่อนต้องล้อเล่นมาตลอดแน่ ๆ)

 They can’t have been trying very hard. (พวกเขาไม่น่าจะพยายามอย่างหนักมาตลอด)

ดูเหมือนกับ .....

 Look(s) like .... มีความหมายว่า “ดูเหมือนกับ....”

It looks like a rabbit.

I think it looks like a duck.

** เติม s ที่ look เนื่องจากประธานเป็ นเอกพจน์ (มีหนึ่งเดียว)

ดูเหมือนกับ .....

 Look(s) like .... มีความหมายว่า “ดูเหมือนกับ....”

They look like four shelves.

I think they look like three shelves.

** ไม่เติม s ที่ look เนื่องจากประธานเป็ นพหูพจน์ (มีมากกว่าหนึ่ง)
