What is imagery?

- Descriptions that use sensory language to create mental images

(language that evokes the
senses: sight, sound, smell, touch,
and taste)

An author uses imagery to:

*describe a smell, sound, taste, image or touch to
help the reader experience these things as
well.

*This is why it is important to picture
things in your head as you read!

The screen rattled as the thunderstorm boomed overhead.

My arm hit the top of the oven as I took the hot pan out.
