Basic rules

Comparatives

We use comparative adjectives to give information about 2 sustantives (person, object, place)

Example:

The mouse is SMALLER than the cat.

SHORT ADJECTIVES

To make a comparative from a short adjective we add "er" at the end of the word + the word "THAN"

Example:

The mouse is smallER than the cat.

SHORT ADJECTIVES

If the adjective is a "CVC" (consonant + vowel + consonant) like in BIG - HOT - FAT we double the last consonant +er+than

Example:

Julia is fatTER than Betty.

SHORT ADJECTIVES

If the adjective end in "Y" like:

HAPPY - LAZY - CRAZY - LUCKY

We change the "Y" for an "I" +er+than

Example:

The boy is lazIER than the girl.

LONG ADJECTIVES

For long adjectives we just add "more" BEFORE the word and "than" AFTER the word.

Example:

The princess is MORE beautiful THAN the witch.

IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES

Some adjectives have their own forms and don't follow the rules:

Good - BETTER - THE BEST

Bad - WORSE - THE WORST

Superlative Adjectives

What are superlative adjectives?

4 types of Superlative Adjectives

1. adjective + est

2. adjective (y) - y +iest

3. most + adjective

4. irregular form

Example 1 - add 'est'

• big - the biggest

• large - the largest

• great - the greatest

Example 2 - adjective (y) , -y+iest

• noisy - the noisiest

• heavy - the heaviest

• pretty - the prettiest

Example 3 - 'most' + adjective

• expensive - most expensive

• beautiful - most beautiful

• poisonous - most poisonous

Example 4 - irregular

• good - best

• bad - worst

• less - least

• more - most
