He didn't go to the party. He didn't meet John.

What would have happened if he had gone to the party?

If he had gone to the party, he would have met John.

Then, when do we use the third conditional?

• We use it to imagine HYPOTHETICAL PAST SITUATIONS

• Therefore, these situations are NOT POSSIBLE, because the past cannot be changed...

Where would you put each conditional?

'I would have missed the party if I had stayed at home'

• I stayed at home (condition)

• So I missed the party (consequence)

How do we form the Third conditional?

• We have two parts (like every conditional) --> the condition (if) and the 'consequence'

• Condition: if + past perfect (had) (If I had stayed at home)

• Consequence: would/could have + past participle (I wouldn't have lost my wallet)

• 'If I had stayed at home, I wouldn't have lost my wallet'
