A concise way of substituting specific values for x
Written: f(x)
Read: "f of x"
5
Substitute "in" value for x (or other variable)
Calculate "out" value using Order of Operations
This example is showing f(x)=5x + 1
This is read f (of x) = 5x plus 1
So, with function notation, the y is replaced with f(x).
6
Here, we're told that our rule is
f(x) = -2x +4 and that x is equal to -3.
When we input -3 into our equation, we get an output of 10.
Make sure you are using FUNCTION NOTATION. f(-3) = 10. This is read f of -3 equal 10.
7
Math Response
Find f(x) if x=-2.

23
Steps to graphing a function:
24
Fill in the Blanks
To graph the function y=x2+2 ,
first make a chart.
Enter your answers as they would appear from top to bottom in the chart to the left.
Then move to the next slide to graph.
25
Graphing
Drag the two points to create the graph of the function from the previous slide:
y=x2+2

Poll
Choose the answer that best describes how you feel about this chapter.
I like this chapter, and I think I've got it.
I have no idea how to do any of this and I need help.
I'm not sure how to make a table and graph.
I don't understand how to put a number in for x in an equation and get an answer.
