The piano
There is so much more we can learn from the piano. The quarter note was our “home base” for learning rhythm, and the piano will be the “home base” for our discussion of melody and harmony.
There are 88 black and white keys on the piano. As we go up or down the piano, the frequencies get higher or lower. But even though there are 88 keys on the piano, there are only 12 different notes! Sound confusing? Let’s clarify.
A note is a shorthand word musicians use to refer to a specific written duration (like quarter notes or half notes), or a specific pitch (in this case, a specific pitch on the piano) that lasts a certain amount of time. We already talked about notes in terms of duration, so now we will talk about notes in terms of a specific pitch on the piano.
