An Introduction to . . .

Character Archetype
a type of character whose image, ideals, or pattern of behaviour
is so consistent and defining that it has come to be considered a
universal model for people and characters.

These model character types are so commonly and simply defined that they cross
cultural boundaries. E.g. Educated people in China have the same perception of a
“hero” as people living in isolated tribes in Australia

For a character’s actions to seem believable they must reflect the personality of that
character. Character archetypes are a great way to help understand what motivates
your heroes and villains – the reasons they do what they do.

How do Character Archetypes Work in Literature?

Character archetypes make characters authentic⇒ since
they’re based on real human behaviour patterns.

Archetypes make characters more interesting, yet
consistent⇒ the best characters have unexpected archetypes
within them, but the presence of the archetypal patterns keep
the character consistent.

For example, you wouldn’t expect Harry Potter-- a poor, fragile,
orphan to be a MAGICIAN archetype⇒ but it works. Knowing
that Harry fits the Magician archetype helped JK Rowling to
keep Harry’s choices and behaviours consistent.

How do Character Archetypes Work in Literature?

within them, but the presence of the archetypal patterns keep
the character consistent.

For example, you wouldn’t expect Sabrina, a sweet, innocent
highschooler to be a HERO/WARRIOR archetype, but the
creator of Chilling Tales of Sabrina would disagree.
