Poll
How are you doing today?
AWESOME!
I'm fine
Ask me later
3
OBJECTIVES
● Understand the quantity of a mole.
● Use conversion factors to calculate
number of moles or atoms.
4
Multiple Choice
By the end of this lesson you should be able to...
Understand and calculate the mole
Make guacamole
Have a mole as a pet
I'm supposed to learn something?
5
WHAT IS A MOLE?
6
When We Count Stuff...
Pair = 2
Dozen = 12
Gross = 144
Mole = ???
7
Multiple Choice
You work at a bakery... a customer comes in and asks for 4 dozen cupcakes. How many cupcakes will you bake?
400
100
48
24
8
A MOLE IS...
6.02 x 1023
of “anything”
(particles, atoms, molecules, etc.)
9
Multiple Choice
How many jellybeans are in a mole of jellybeans?
48
6.02 x 1023
2.3 x 10602
3.14
10
Multiple Choice
6.02 x 1023 marshmallows equal _______
1 mole of marshmallows
1/2 dozen marshmallows
6 moles of marshmallows
23 marshmallows
11
WHO IS AVOGADRO?
A scientist who
concluded that
equal volumes of
gas under equal
conditions contain
equal amounts of
molecules.
12
6.02 x 1023 is
also known as
Avogadro’s
number.
(get it?)
13
In other words…
The Mole is a BIG number used to
describe things that are really small
...like atoms and molecules.
...so how big are we talking about???
14
Multiple Choice
6.02 x 1023 is also called __________ number
Avogadro's
Simpson's
Einstein's
Newton's
15
To Review…
1 mole = 6.02 x 1023
Also called Avagadro’s Number.
It is a unit of counting just like we
use a dozen to mean 12.
16
CALCULATING
MOLES

This will also be posted as a video on Google Classroom.
You should still complete the questions here however.
17
A MOLE IS...
6.02 x 1023
of “anything”
(particles, atoms, molecules, etc.)
18
Examples!
19
Multiple Choice
How much money (in dollars) is 12 quarters?
$12.00
$3.00
$20.00
$2.00
20
Let’s say you have 12 quarters… how much money is
that in dollars?
To solve this problem you probably remembered
that 1 dollar = 4 quarters. Since you have 12 quarters,
you divide that by 4 and came up with 3 dollars.
21
If you set this up like a math problem it might look like this:
What you
are given
Things you know are
equal each other
22
Then simplify. Notice the “quarters” cancel out because
they are being divided by each other.
You are left with the dollar.
All this is what happened in
your head, but dollars and
quarters are easy to work with.
23
How many moles are in
5.14 x 1024 atoms of calcium?
24
START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW….
5.14 x 1024 atoms
25
USE YOUR CONVERSION FACTOR…
GET RID OF “ATOMS” USING SOMETHING IT IS EQUAL TO (moles).
5.14 x 1024 atoms
1 mole
6.02 x 1023 atoms
26
SIMPLIFY AND CANCEL OUT THE 'ATOMS'
5.14 x 1024 atoms
1 mole
6.02 x 1023 atoms
6.02 x 1023 atoms
5.14 x 1024 atoms
= 8.54 moles
27
Try the following problems.
YOUR TURN!
28
Multiple Choice
How many moles are in 3.18 x 1024 atoms of silver?
6.02 moles
0.12 moles
5.28 moles
0.19 moles
29
Multiple Choice
How many moles are in 4.21 x 1023 molecules of sugar?
0.70 moles
25.34 moles
1.43 moles
2.53 x 1024 moles
30
How many molecules are in
3.5 moles of NaCl?
31
START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW….
3.5 moles
32
USE YOUR CONVERSION FACTOR…
GET RID OF “moles” USING SOMETHING IT IS EQUAL TO (atoms).
THEN CANCEL OUT AND SIMPLIFY
3.5 moles
1 mole
6.02 x 1023 atoms
33
USE YOUR CONVERSION FACTOR…
GET RID OF “moles” USING SOMETHING IT IS EQUAL TO (atoms).
THEN CANCEL OUT AND SIMPLIFY
3.5 moles
1 mole
6.02 x 1023 atoms
3.5 x 6.02 x 1023 = 2.11 x 1024 atoms
34
Try the following problems.
YOUR TURN!
35
Multiple Choice
How many atoms are in 5 moles of aluminum?
1.2 x 1023 atoms
6.02 x 1023 atoms
3.01 x 1024 atoms
5 atoms
36
Multiple Choice
How many molecules are in 2.5 moles of sodium hydroxide?
2.41 x 1023
4.15 x 10-24
4.82 x 1023
1.51 x 1024
37
Poll
Based on THIS LESSON... which best describes you?
I have no idea what is going on!
I see what is going on but still need some help.
I could do this on my own!
I can teach someone else how to do this!
38
Refer to this presentation if
you get stuck doing the
