Vision for Literacy

Our shared commitment is that every Sunnyvale School District student becomes fully literate. Students receive engaging, rigorous, and targeted literacy instruction as they develop and refine their skills through purposeful, engaging, and authentic reading and writing. Instruction includes opportunities for student choice, collaboration, and interaction with relevant and diverse texts as students use literacy skills to explore their world. We create literature-rich environments and foster the love of literacy in all students.

1. Materials provide a sufficient amount of practice in decoding words in isolation and in decodable text (sentences, passages, books) to allow practice of phonics skills.

2. The program introduces a set of irregular (e.g., two) and decodable (e.g. can) high frequency words in a reasonable order and cumulatively reviews them. 

3. Instruction is systematic and organized.

4. Teacher guide includes support for multilingual learners, ELD specific instruction, and for re-teaching. 

5. The program is multi-sensory and includes manipulatives. There are activities to promote orthographic mapping through word building/chaining and manipulation.

Finally, the recommendation is taken to the board and
to make the final decision to approve and adopt.
