Naming branched-chain alkanes:
Step 1. Count the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain.
Step 2. Number each carbon in the parent chain.
Step 3. Name each alkyl group substituent.
Step 4. If the same alkyl group occurs more than once as a branch on the
parent structure, use a prefix (di-, tri-, tetra-, and so on) before its name to
indicate how many times it appears.
Step 5. When different alkyl groups are attached to the same parent
structure, place their names in alphabetical order.
Step 6. Write the entire name, using hyphens to separate numbers from
words and commas to separate numbers.

Blue: "You are a scientist conducting research on the environmental impact of
alkane spills in a marine ecosystem. Describe the potential consequences of an
alkane spill, including the effects on water quality, marine life, and the overall
ecosystem."
Red: "You work for a company that manufactures plastic products using
alkane-based materials. A customer has raised concerns about the
sustainability of these materials. How would you address these concerns and
discuss the potential environmental impacts and benefits of using alkane-based
materials in plastics manufacturing?"
Yellow: "You are a researcher studying the impacts of alkane emissions from a
major transportation hub on local air quality and public health. Analyze the
potential health risks associated with alkane emissions, including the effects
on air quality, human respiratory health, and potential mitigation strategies to
reduce these impacts."
Green: "As a policy maker, you are evaluating the use of alkane-based biofuels
as an alternative to fossil fuels. Discuss the environmental, economic, and
social considerations involved in promoting the use of alkane-based biofuels,
including their potential benefits and drawbacks compared to conventional
fossil fuels."
