As World War I settled into a stalemate, armies of millions of men dug deep trenches.

Trench Warfare

​These trenches helped protect soldiers against intense artillery shelling, machine gun fire, snipers and enemy attacks.

​Conditions were not nice, clean places. Pests like rats and lice were rampant in the trenches. The food often got eaten by these pests.

What was life like in the trenches?

​Rain would flood the trenches and cause health issues like an infection called trenchfoot, which could become so bad that soldiers had to have their feet amputated

​Soldiers generally rotated in three stages in the trenches.

​How did it work?

​1.) On the front trench, fighting

2.) Then in the support trenches

3.) Time resting in the back trenches

The land between the two enemy trenches was called no man's land.

​This was sometimes covered with barbed wire or land mines

​Fun Fact: On Christmas day of 1914 German and British soldiers made a truce to not fight. They met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, played football, and took photographs

Now we will go outside and experience (a non-traumatic) form of trench warfare. Here are my expectations of you:

1.) NO horse-playing, slapping, jumping on each other

2.) You CANNOT scream

3.) You must listen while I am talking because we will still be learning

4.) When I count down you HAVE to get quiet if you want to continue to play the game

Trench Warfare

In break times, you must decide on ONE person to try and cross no man's land without getting hit by the balls.

ONLY that ONE person should be out in no man's land. Everyone else needs to remain in the trenches.

DO NOT step on the balls or squash them. I have 46 and expect to get them all back.
