6.EE.B.7 Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving one-
step equations of the form x + p = q and px = q for cases in which p, q, and x are all
nonnegative rational numbers.

PEMDAS
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is a
great way to remember PEMDAS.
1)Do the math in parentheses first.
2)Do your exponents next.
3)Addition and subtraction work the same way as multiplication and division.
(e.g. 3-2+6 = 7 while 6+2-3 is 5).
4)Multiplication and division are done based on what comes first left to right
( e.g. 3 * 2 / 6 is 1 because the multiplication comes in first from the left, and 6/2*3 is 9
because division comes first).

Variables
Variables are used inplace of what you are solving for.
Variables can be any letter of the alphabet, but it the most commonly used variable is X
Variables are equivalent to a number.

Crucial info!
To solve for a variable you need to get the variable on one side
by itself. The variable should always be positive (X no -X). If it is
negative multiply by -1.
To get the variable to one side, do the opposite operation.
Division and multiplication are opposites
Addition and Subtraction are opposites.

10 + x = 78
The first step would be to realize that to get x
by itself you need to subtract ten from both
sides.
This results with x = 68

Do the opposite of subtraction and add
67 to BOTH sides!
z=165

3x = 12
Since 3 and x are being multiplied you need to do the
opposite.
X = 12/3
Simplify
X = 4

48 / x = 4
The first step would be to realize that to get x by itself you need
to multiply x to both sides. This gives you:
48 = 4x
Now just divide both sides by 4
48 / 4 = x
X = 12

Group Work
A town's total allocation for firefighter's wages and benefits in
a new budget is $600,000. If wages are calculated at $40,000
per firefighter and benefits at $20,000 per firefighter, write an
equation whose solution is the number of firefighters the town
can employ if they spend their whole budget. Solve the
equation.
A man walks 21 miles in a week. On average how many miles a
day does he walk? Write and solve an equation.
